Every kid has their own pace. “by ~X” means the age by which most kids do something. It's guidance, not a deadline. For early-childhood milestones this uses the CDC's 2022 checklists, which list the age by which about 75% of kids reach each one (CDC milestones). Other ages are rough, commonly cited ranges. Skills marked “goal” (sailing, coding, campfires…) have no research-based norm; they're family goals with a suggested age. If you're concerned about your child's development, talk with your pediatrician.

🌊 Water safety: swim lessons reduce drowning risk but don't eliminate it. Always keep close, active watch around water, whatever your child's swimming level.
